A smooth and safe method for importing and exporting passkeys is coming to Apple OSes.

This week, Apple gave a sneak peek at a feature that addresses one of the main problems with passkeys, the industry standard for website and app authentication that is immune to password-related assaults like credential phishing.

The upcoming major releases of iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and visionOS will have the import/export functionality that Apple showcased at this week's Worldwide Developers Conference. It seeks to address one of the main issues with passkeys as they currently stand. Passkeys generated on a single credential management or operating system are mostly restricted to those settings. For example, a passkey generated on a Mac can sync with other Apple devices linked to the same iCloud account with relative ease. It has been hard to move them to a Windows device or even to a specific credential manager that is installed on the same Apple device.

Growing pains

Because of this restriction, some have argued that passkeys are a ploy by big businesses to force customers into particular product ecosystems. Users have also legitimately expressed concern that the inability to transfer keys raises the possibility of losing access to crucial accounts in the event that a passkey-storing device is misplaced, stolen, or destroyed.

Aware of the limitation, the FIDO Alliance—a group of over 100 platform providers, app developers, and websites that is creating the authentication standard—has been working on programming interfaces that will increase the flexibility of passkey syncing. Although the firm has not yet disclosed a date for their general release, a recent Android Authority breakdown of the Google password manager demonstrates that developers are actively creating import/export features. (The ability to move passwords to iOS apps was added to the Google password manager earlier this year, but the procedure is cumbersome.) Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, Devolutions, NordPass, and Okta are among the many businesses involved in the development, according to a recent FIDO update.

According to the narrator of the Apple video, "people should have the freedom to manage their credentials wherever they choose because they own them." "People can choose which credential manager they want to use and have more control over their data thanks to this." The transfer functionality gives apps and OSes an industry-standard way to more securely sync these credentials, and it will also work with passwords and verification codes.
