Arrests for "online monkey torture videos" continue to occur.
These videos of monkey torture are the result of a world that is increasingly connected to the internet. Online communities like "million tears"—thankfully closed—can let those who like seeing infant animals examined, cut, and tortured in horrifying ways interact with others in their community.
When they do connect with other like-minded individuals, they communicate over chat apps like Signal and Telegram, frequently utilizing encryption.
Through a variety of smartphone apps, money is collected and subsequently distributed to videographers in nations with poor wages and an abundance of monkeys. (The majority of the examples I've seen involve Indonesia; to understand more about how these groups operate, watch my piece from last year.)
There, a local subcontractor, occasionally a child, tortures monkeys in accordance with Western standards. The commissioning sadists receive the smartphone footage of the torture and use the same online communities where they first met to spread the word to other people.
This week, the US government unveiled an indictment against a number of more Americans who are said to have commissioned these movies, displaying the regrettable trend once more. Using online handles such as "Bitchy" and "Demon Sword Soul Crusher," the accused are from a variety of states, including Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
The footage was produced by an Indonesian cameraman, and it was shockingly inexpensive—a video depicting a "burning hot screwdriver" being inserted into a young monkey's orifice was commissioned for just $40. Once the funds were delivered, the requested video was recorded and distributed via a "phone-based messaging program," but the quality left the Americans feeling quite let down. The videographer had heated a screwdriver on a stove and lightly rubbed it against the monkey a few times, avoiding a full-on impalement.
One of the Americans is said to have grumbled to another, "So lame," It was "Live and learn," they said.
Thus, the team made another attempt. The group reorganized on a different platform and changed their name to "the trail of trillion tears" after its host had expelled "Million Tears." They requested a more explicit version of the same footage from another Indonesian videographer. Even though this version was more vicious than the previous one, it was still unsatisfactory. According to reports, one of the Americans told another, "That's not what you asked for, honey." That's the version of the village idiot. However, I'm discussing with someone hiring a reputable filmmaker to do it."
Arrests continue:
In 2021, communications from the "million tears" group were leaked to animal rights groups such as Action for Primates and Lady Freethinker, which then turned them over to law enforcement. However, it took years for the leaders of the torture organization to be apprehended and charged.
Ronald Bedra of Ohio, one of these leaders, admitted in 2024 to procuring the tapes and sending "a thumb drive containing 64 videos of monkey torture to a co-conspirator in Wisconsin." In a letter to the judge requesting his sentence, his mother stated that her son must "have been undergoing some mental crisis when he decided to create the website." She claimed that as a youngster, he had cherished every family pet, even giving a fish a funeral.
Late last year, Bedra received a sentence of 54 months in prison. He has also lost his wife, his children, and his career, according to letters from family members.
Two further suspected co-conspirators were charged and detained in April 2025; their cases were only made public this week. It appears that two further co-conspirators from this group are still at large.
Eleven other Americans, who seem to be from a different network, were indicted in May 2025 for their involvement in monkey torture organizations. According to reports, this group "paid a minor in Indonesia to commit the requested acts on camera."
Arrests have also been occurring on the Indonesian side of this equation. Over the past two years, Indonesian authorities have detained several videographers in response to complaints from animal rights organizations.
Update: The Scottish Sun has published a fairly graphic article about the "sadistic Scots mum jailed for helping to run a horrific global monkey torture network," demonstrating the global reach of these torture organizations. After US police dismantled another monkey torturing network that involved contracting out the torture to Indonesia, the 39-year-old was reportedly apprehended.
