Your search results can now be used by Google to create a phony AI podcast.
Your search results can now be used by Google to create a phony AI podcast.
With Note book LM, you can use a Gemini AI model to explore documents and notes, making it one of Google's best generative AI implementations. Google introduced the capability to create "audio overviews" of your source material in Note book LM last year. As a test, Google has now included those phony AI podcasts in search results. You can have two fictional persons tell you what the results indicate in place of clicking links or reading the AI Overview.
Currently only available in search labs, this function requires manual activation and is not being widely implemented. However, anyone can choose to use the new Audio Overview search feature. You will see the embedded player in Google search results as soon as you sign up for the test. But the typical block of AI-generated text isn't at the top. Rather, it appears beneath the "People also ask" knowledge graph section, following the initial search results.
To begin, you must click the generate button because Google isn't wasting resources by creating the audio automatically. After a few seconds, you are presented with a dialogue between two artificial intelligence voices that summarizes the search results. The player has the ability to speed up or slow down playback and provides a list of the sources used to create the overview.
As an example, Google recommends searching for "how do noise cancellation headphones work," however we're seeing a lot of searches for Audio Overviews. Even better, you may search for "Google audio overviews" to hear an Audio Overview define the term. In a sort of recursive technical terror, that's cool.
For straightforward subjects, the summaries we've heard are generally correct, but there are a lot more chances for mistakes here. The tiny set of documents and webpages you feed into NotebookLM serves as the foundation for the AI. There are more chances for the AI to summarize incorrectly when it comes to search results. We have observed this issue with text AI Overviews on numerous occasions.
Google has expanded its fake podcasts beyond search. Since making its debut in NotebookLM, Audio Overviews have also appeared in Google Docs and Google's Gemini Deep Research mode. We anticipate seeing Audio Overviews in even more locations in the future, considering Google's quick development of AI technologies. Even if you skip this test, don't be shocked if Audio Overviews start to appear in your search results soon. After all, before they advanced to the default search experience, the text-based AI Overviews were only in the laboratory for a few months.
