Amid threats from Apple, Trump Mobile starts, promoting a $499 US-made phone.
The Trump Organization announced Trump Mobile, a new wireless service, on Monday, confirming that Donald Trump's image will soon be used to sell smartphones.
The press release states that Trump Mobile's "flagship" wireless plan will be called "The 47 Plan," a reference to Trump's current term as the 47th president of the United States.
According to the Trump Organization, the plan provides "transformational" cellular service at a "unbeatable value" of $47.45 per month. The service just connects to the 5G network through "all three major carriers," the news announcement said, and the cost appears to be comparable to other big carriers' "best phone plans," according to a recent CNET roundup.
On the Trump Mobile website, the company claims to be "the only mobile service aligned with your values and built on reliability, freedom, and American pride." This suggests that the Trump name is the primary selling factor. The "foray into telecommunications mainly comprises a licensing agreement" made by the Trump Organization, according to CNBC, is not a daring new product in the market.
The Trump Mobile deal appears to be no different from earlier agreements for Trump-branded goods, such as watches, guitars, Bibles, memecoins, and perfumes, which brought in over $8 million for the president last year. According to The Hill, "those who see Trump’s family as excessively monetizing his time in office" are likely to condemn it just as much as they did prior agreements.
The T1 Phone is available for preorder today for $499, although it's unclear exactly when it will be released—the press release states August, but the website states September. That is less than the price of an iPhone 16, which is currently $799 but might increase by at least 25% if Apple shifts production to the US, according to analysts. However, 404 Media stated that their effort to preorder the phone resulted in a page load failure and incorrectly charged their credit card, suggesting that there might be some problems.
The Trump Organization apparently anticipates that the Trump Mobile brand will power a variety of goods, such as phone cases and battery charges, just like Apple or any other device manufacturer. According to Bloomberg, Trump Mobile may even open its own retail locations.
However, the new mobile empire can fall apart at any time. Customers are repeatedly cautioned on the Trump Mobile website that the company's use of the Trump trademark may "be terminated or revoked," adding that "The Trump Organization or any of their respective affiliates or principals do not design, develop, manufacture, distribute, or sell Trump Mobile, its products, or services."
The press statement praised Trump Mobile's "reliability," yet the terms explicitly state that the Trump Organization is not responsible for the services provided by third parties, and that the wireless services may be terminated "permanently" and without prior notice.
The rules further state that all T1 Phone sales are non-refundable and subject to price adjustments once orders are placed, with Trump Mobile apparently unable to honor prices in the event that its website contains inaccuracies.
The size of the potential market for Trump's new phone is unknown. Even at a low price, Trump's new phone is unlikely to compete with Apple, which has long held a dominant position in the smartphone market.
The target audience is obviously Trump supporters, but the branding might be unclear. In an interview footage posted on Bluesky, Eric Trump implied that the phones aren't even being manufactured in the US at the moment. Both an American flag and a "T" logo, which is slightly reminiscent of the T-Mobile logo and different from Trump's sans serif campaign emblem, are imprinted on the T1 Phone in product photos.
Aside from its noticeably peculiar dimensions, the phone's most notable characteristic seems to be its gold hue. The T1 Phone appears to have chosen an oddly extended design at a time when competitors' smartphones are constantly getting larger to improve the display. This makes the phone's screen smaller, which may affect how images appear give a precise representation of the finished item.
