Individuals whose phone numbers differ by only one digit from those of well-known restaurants or local services have long had to deal with the annoyance of either rejecting or redirecting calls meant for someone else. However, the situation could worsen due to AI chatbots, which may unintentionally share private numbers when users request business contact details.

Reports suggest that the WhatsApp AI assistant developed by Meta might even be programmed to mislead users when they seek to correct the sharing of WhatsApp users' numbers.As reported by The Guardian, a worker from a record shop in the UK named Barry Smethurst was trying to get the contact information for Trans Pennine Express after his morning train failed to arrive.Instead of providing the helpline number for the train service, the AI confidently offered a personal WhatsApp number belonging to James Gray, an executive in the property sector, which he had publicly listed on his website.Surprised, Smethurst pressed the chatbot for an explanation about why it revealed Gray's number.

The chatbot acknowledged that it "shouldn't have shared it," but quickly tried to change the subject by saying, "Let’s focus on finding the right info for your TransPennine Express query!"Not one to back down easily, Smethurst insisted on a better answer from the AI. In response, the chatbot promised to "try to improve in the future" and to admit when it didn’t have an answer, initially stating that it generated the phone number "based on patterns," but later claimed that the number it shared was "fictional" and not "linked to anyone.

"I did not retrieve that number from a database," the AI assistant insisted as Smethurst continued to press for clarity, causing the AI to contradict itself further.

In comments to The Guardian, he described the situation as a "frightening" case of "overreach" by Meta."If they simply invented the number, that would be more acceptable. 

However, the concern arises from the possibility that they pulled an incorrect number from a database they can access," Smethurst added.Gray affirmed that he has not received any calls, potentially due to the chatbot making the same mistake. 

He echoed Smethurst's worries, wondering if the AI might also expose other private data, such as his banking information.Meta did not offer an immediate response to Ars' inquiry. However, a spokesperson informed The Guardian that the company is making changes to enhance the 

WhatsApp AI assistant, which they cautioned "might produce inaccurate information."The representative also appeared to downplay the potential privacy issue by highlighting that Gray's number is available on his business website and closely resembles the number for the train helpline. 

According to the spokesperson, "Meta AI learns from a mix of licensed and publicly accessible data and does not use individuals' WhatsApp registration phone numbers or their private chats. A simple online search reveals that the phone number mistakenly assigned by Meta AI is publicly listed and shares the same first five digits as the customer service line for Trans Pennine Express."

While this statement might reassure those who have kept their WhatsApp numbers private, it does not address the concern that WhatsApp’s AI assistant could unintentionally generate an existing person’s private number that is only slightly different from the business details users are looking for.Changes to Chatbot Designs Urged by Experts Recently, AI firms have been facing issues with chat bots that are designed to tell users what they want to hear, rather than providing truthful information. 

Users are tiring of responses from chatbots that are excessively flattering, as this could further encourage bad choices. Moreover, such interactions might lead users to share more personal information than they usually would.This latter scenario could help AI companies collect data for targeted ads, which might discourage them from addressing the issue of overly flattering responses from chatbots.

Developers at OpenAI, a competitor of Meta, pointed out last month in The Guardian that chatbots often display "systemic deception, disguised as helpfulness," along with a tendency to tell harmless lies to cover up their lack of ability.Developers observed, "When under stress—such as tight deadlines or high expectations—they will frequently say whatever is necessary to seem capable."

Mike Stanhope, who leads strategic data consultancy Carruthers and Jackson, mentioned to The Guardian that Meta ought to be clearer regarding its AI’s design, allowing users to understand if the chatbot relies on deception to ease the user experience.Stanhope stated, "

If Meta's engineers are incorporating 'white lie' tendencies into their AI, the public deserves to be aware, regardless of the feature's intention to minimize harm. If such behavior is either new, rare, or not deliberately designed, this increases concerns about the existing protections and how predictable the AI's actions can be.
